The best day we had – Koh Phi Phi Island

From all the places we have been in Thailand so far, Koh Phi Phi is our absolute favorite. Especially one of the days was just perfect. I want to share the details of that day with you, one day you might go there too and do the same as us.
We stayed at Ton Sai Bay at ?The Beacha Club Hotel? right at the beach with a beautiful sea view from the room. It was a bit more expensive to stay at the Northern side of the island but it is more convenient and fun too, since all the parties and bars are at Ton Sai Bay.
On our ?perfect day? we took a private long tail boat at 6am in the morning for 2000 Baht (around 40 Euro). We picked up my classmates from Copenhagen, Giulia and Alisa, whom we met coincidently the day before.

Sailing to Maya Bay

So the four of us and our boat driver named ?Mr. Potato? sailed down South to Maya Bay, which is famous because of the movie ?The Beach?. We arrived there early enough to avoid all the tourists and tours.
Thomas and I went to Maya Bay ?The Beach? in 3 different ways. The last time was on our ?perfect day? with the private boat, which was the best way to enjoy Maya Bay. (Click read about the 3 different ways)
This time we could enjoy the bay and white beach without having any boats and tourists in front of us.
Like Leonardo DiCaprio, we had the entire island almost for ourselves. We sat down and enjoyed the view. What a great way to start the day.

Cliff jumping

Afterwards we spend an hour at ?The Beach?, Mr. Potato brought us to Losama Bay Phiphi, which was right opposite of Maya Bay. Thomas informed himself the day before and there he found the perfect spot to do cliff jumping. Full of excitement he climbed up the cliff and took the 17m fall into the blue ocean (Click here to View)

Monkey Beach and Dolphins

At this point we agreed, that the day couldn?t get any better. Little did we know that this was not the end yet. We took a break at Phi Leh lagoon for a quick swim and snorkeling.
Then we sailed up North towards Monkey Beach, a beautiful spot with white sand and clear blue water with monkeys playing on the beach.

[/av_image]

On our way there we were very lucky and met a pack of dolphins. They were swimming around our boat for a while. Mr. Potato informed us that dolphins come closer to the beaches after a few rainy days. None of us knew it, but apparently dolphins are that uncommon near Koh Phi Phi.

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Dolphins-at-koh-phi-phi.jpg’ attachment=’495′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=”][/av_image]

Our 3 hour boat trip ended after we visited Monkey Beach and we took a dip in the water, surrounded by high cliffs and rocks. Thomas and I both agree that it was the most beautiful beach during our entire trip. If you are travelling in Thailand, you should stay a few days in Koh Phi Phi! You can rent a canoe for about 200 bath and sail from Ton Sai Bay over to Monkey Beach (it only takes about 10 minutes).

The end of our ?perfect day?

We were back at our hotel around 11 am and got some breakfast at the beach which came free with our room. The rest of the day we spent swimming and tanning at Ton Sai Bay until sunset. Personally, the best way to end a ?perfect day? is getting dinner at ?Grand PP Arcade?. Alisa recommended the place, because she read a lot of positive reviews about that restaurant. Indeed, it was the best service and food we got in Thailand. Nat, the waitress, spoke perfect English, remembered us from the day before and she made sure that we got the food exactly how we wanted it – not too spicy and vegan for our friend. There was no wish she couldn?t grant.

That was our best day in Thailand. So, if you are in Koh Phi Phi, stay at ?The Beacha Club? and make sure to get a private boat and not a tour, wake up early to avoid the tourists at Maya Bay and Monkey Beach, enjoy the sunset at Ton Sai Bay and get dinner at Grand PP Arcade. I promise, you will love every minute of it 🙂

Cliff Jump at Maya Bay – “The Beach”

Cliff Jump at Maya Bay ? “The Beach” (by my boyfriend Thomas)

Map and how to get there below!

I always loved the rush of adrenaline and after I found out that there is a possibility to do cliff jumping in Koh Phi Phi, I was eager to do it. After researches on the internet- only finding vague descriptions- I decided to get on a boat and find the spot myself.

The view from up there was just breathe taking! And the sizzling feeling of excitement was flowing through me as I was preparing to jump!
On the count of three I jumped and as I dived into the clear blue water. Overwhelmed by accomplishment, the adrenaline was filling my body and my mind was free. The jump was from an approximately 17m cliff, close to Maya Bay. Similar to the scene in ?The Beach?. Leo and his travel mates had to overcome the last obstacle on their journey. They jumped from a high cliff to get to the hidden paradise.
It was one of the best things I did during this trip. I would do it again anytime.

How to get to the Cliff Jump at Maya Bay – The Beach

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/map-for-cliff-jump3.png’ attachment=’468′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=’yes’ font_size=’19’ appearance=’on-hover’]
We Used Route A – Taxi boat with a guy called Potato highly recommended !
[/av_image]

Route A

Jump on a private taxi boat from Koh Phi Phi Don towards Maya Bay and sail to the cliff

Tell the taxi boat driver to sail towards Maya Bay, but go a bit further south to the tip of Koh Phi Phi Le. ?Behind? Maya Bay lays Losama Bay. There you will see a huge rock further in. You won?t miss it, because there are ropes and bamboo constructions, which mark a secure spot to jump with deep water.

If you get close enough to that cliff, you get out of the water with a simple rope, hanging above you. Be aware of the bamboo latter afterwards. It should function as latter but it doesn?t look like one and it seems rather unstable to me. I didn?t count on it, which is why I put my weight on the rocks to avoid a premature free fall in case the ?latter? would break.
The jump spot is pretty high, I guess about 14 – 17 meters.

I did the climb barefoot, which was quite alright, but if you have some kind of shoes it would be better. The path to the top is rough and has some sharp rocks. Additionally shoes would soften the blow when breaking the water.

Route B

For people who are on a public tours

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/route-B.jpg’ attachment=’476′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=’yes’ font_size=’22’ appearance=’on-hover’]
Just down here to the right !
[/av_image]

Walk from Maya bay to Losama Bay

Another way to reach the cliff, is walking from ?The Beach? towards the toilets and follow the path down to the left, and go up a small stairway made out of wood. I decided against it because it was not as easy as Route A. It takes about 5-10 minute walk from Maya Bay to Losama Bay. From there it?s possible to climb down a spider web made of rope and swim to the cliff, where I jumped off.

Normally people start kayaking or similar from that end of the island.

I do not recommend this way, because the rocks are very sharp and the water seems quite shallow at the bottom. If you still choose to do so, you should be very careful. When you climbed down there, you will see the cliff about 50 meters to your right.
Remember that you probably have to go back the way you came. If no one is picking you up from Losama Bay, you will have to climb up the spider web again and that might be potentially more harmful than the jump itself. Just don?t get yourself caught out there!

Good Luck! And have fun!

Places to be in Phuket

Phuket

We stayed 8 days at Patong Beach, the most touristic place of Phuket and we loved every minute of it. Our hotel was 10 minute walk from the beach, just a few minutes from shops and a mall and right next to a night market. We rented a motor bike to get from one beach to another, since there are so many in Phuket and every.day we got went on a little roadtrip to explore the island.
In the following article I want to talk about our favorite beaches and which places you have to go, when you are in Phuket.

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Patong-Beach.jpg’ attachment=’445′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=”][/av_image]

Patong Beach

If you like bars, parties and shopping malls, this is the place to stay. Patong was really crowded, even though we were here in low season. I didn?t mind the party vibe here, because we stayed a bit off the street with all the bars and night clubs and the beach was quite beautiful. Our main reason to keep staying in Patong was the location.
It was quite ?central? and with the motor bike you can go to many beaches within 10 to 30 minutes.
[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Sunset-Patong-Beach.jpg’ attachment=’447′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=’yes’ font_size=’23’ appearance=’on-hover’]

[/av_image]

Kata Beach

On our way to Big Buddha we came across Kata Beach, which is on the other side of the hill. It is located 15 minutes from Patong by motorbike. The beach was beautiful with soft sand and it is not crowded at all. Sadly the waves were too big to swim further outside, but nevertheless, it?s good enough to dip in. We liked Kata beach because it was so calm and very clean, a perfect place to suntan and relax.

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Kata-beach.jpg’ attachment=’439′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=’yes’ font_size=’23’ appearance=’on-hover’]

[/av_image]

Karon  Viewpoint

This was quite a long ride from Patong. 50 minutes by motorbike and many hills later, we reached the viewpoint. The scenery from up there was truly magnificent and worth the long trip. You can see the big white Buddha sitting on top of Chalong on one side and Kata town and the beach on the other.

Paradise Beach

One of my absolute favorite place, which is a bit hidden, but only 10 minutes ride from Patong main beach. A lot of people we met haven?t heard about it before, I guess it is not as well known as Patong Beach or Kata Beach. Is quite an adventure to get there by motor bike, because there is no real street for the last 150m or so. It?s truly a roller coaster ride through a muddy hillside, but in the end, it is worth it and you will be rewarded with a fantastic beach in between big rocks and the forest. We had to pay 100 Baht ( 20 DKK / 3 Euro) entry for the beach, but you get a sun bed and an umbrella included. Paradise Beach is a small and private beach, so you don?t have to worry about leaving your things on land when you go for a swim. There is a cute restaurant with great food nearby and to our surprise, it wasn?t even overpriced. If you go to Phuket, you really have to come to Paradise Beach, it is a stunningly beautiful place.

Kamala Beach

We went here on our last day in Phuket, because of a tip from my friend Jessika. The beach was north of Patong and on our way there we had a beautiful view over the beaches from uphill. Kamala had really strong and high waves when we were there, which is perfect for surfers, but not for a relaxed swim. There were restaurants and hotels nearby with a lot of families. Kamala has a whole different atmosphere than Patong, it was more quiet and calm. The main beach in Patong always had a lot of activities ongoing like Jet skies or Parasailing. Both has its perks and we would recommend either place.

Awesome Freshmade Ice Cream in Thailand!

A couple of months ago, I heard about a special ice cream roll which you can buy from street vendors in Thailand. After several food markets, we finally found one stand and of course, we had to try it instantly.

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ice1.jpg’ attachment=’429′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=”][/av_image]

The ice cream is made with fresh fruits like kiwi, banana or strawberry, candy or chocolate and whipped cream icing (the white fluid in the picture/video)

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ice2.jpg’ attachment=’428′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=”][/av_image]

Thomas decided for a simple Banana-Chocolate taste. The ice cream man repeatedly chopped the ingredients and mashed them together, until the small pieces turn into a paste. He moved and flipped it, so the consistent wont stick to the cold pan.

[av_image src=’http://metropolife.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ice3.jpg’ attachment=’427′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ animation=’no-animation’ link=” target=” styling=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=”][/av_image]
He spread the mash over the ice block/ cold pan in a thin layer and waited shortly. When the layer froze, he scraped it off in one movement and it naturally curled into a roll. Five rolls later, our fresh made ice cream was finished and it tasted more than delicious.

A few nights in Bangkok

We spent 3 days in Bangkok and we loved every minute of it. Our apartment was located in a nice and quiet area called Sukhumvit. I would recommend this part of the city, but if you are looking for something right in the middle of Bangkok’s big city life, you should probably stay around Siam or Silom.
The place we stayed at had a pretty awesome rooftop pool with a great view over the city. One of our greatest joys in Bangkok was to hang out there in the morning time.

On the way to the Grand Palace
[/av_image]

We arrived Thursday at noon and had a hell of a jetlag, so we slept the entire day and started to explore Bangkok in the evening. The street market and food stands were literally in every corner and let me tell you, Thai street food is one of the best things in the world!
The next days we spent sightseeing the usual touristic things, like the Grand Palace or the Skyline in Siam, but you can read that up in any lonely planet, so I will keep it short 🙂

Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok
[/av_image]

My absolute favourite was the weekend market Chatuchak, 30 minutes outside of Bangkok centre. It is a enormous 35 hectar big market with all things you never thought you would need but want to have as soon as you see them. We spent an entire day in there and we were throughout amazed by all the handmade artcraft, décor, clothing, painting and of course, the fake things like handbags, shoes and phones. The market had literally everything you could think of. If you ever go to Bangkok, you should plan the weekend market into your trip.

Overall, we had a great time in Bangkok, eventhough is was raining one day and it ruined our plan of taking a river tour.
We left Bangkok on monday and are now relaxing and enjoying some lazy days in Phuket.
